Focus Area 4: Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights with Bodily Autonomy Promotion - SRHR+BAP
Focus area Purpose:
We are working to empower and support impoverished rural adolescent girls and young women in Tanzania to have knowledge on, advocate for and exercise without coercion their sexual and reproductive health and rights, bodily autonomy, and live free from violence, stigma, and discrimination.Focus area Priority/Goal:
By 2050, we aim to increase awareness, knowledge, and access to comprehensive, rights-based sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and services and bodily autonomy awareness for at least 500,000 impoverished rural adolescent girls and young women aged 10–24 in Tanzania so that they may be able to make informed decisions, claim bodily autonomy, and live free from gender-based violence, stigma, and discrimination in matters concerning their bodies, health, and futures.Focus area Interventions (Actions):
We are determined to reach our goal under this focus area by implementing the following activities:
1. Increase Awareness and Knowledge on Sexual and Reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and bodily autonomy to impoverished rural adolescent girls and young-women through SRHR workshops and campaigns, information dissemination using posters, leaflets, mobile SRHR education, digital and radio campaigns, parents or guardians engagement and out of schools and schools-based SRHR and bodily autonomy initiatives.
2. Enhance Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Services through linking impoverished rural adolescent girls and young-women with youth-friendly health services in private and public health facilities to access contraceptive and counseling in regards with making informed decisions on their health and bodies, developing clear referral mechanisms for sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) survivors and connect them with medical facilities for treatment and legal aid firms for justice access.
3. Promote bodily Autonomy and rights by establishing and supporting safe spaces (e.g., clubs, peer networks) for impoverished rural adolescent girls and young women to discuss SRHR, SGBV, build self-esteem, leadership skills, and advocate for their rights, partnering with Laws firms to provide information on existing laws related to SRHR, child marriage, sexual and gender-based violence.
4. Empower impoverished rural adolescent girls and young women to understand and claim their legal rights, strengthen mechanisms for reporting and addressing SRHR violations and SGBV, ensuring survivors have access to justice and support without fear of retribution or re-victimization.
5. Increase awareness for Male Engagement and Allyship by conducting initiatives targeting boys and young men, male teachers, local, religious and traditional leaders to promote gender equality and justice, respectful relationships, SRHR, Bodily autonomy and challenge harmful norms that perpetuate Sexual and Gender-based violence, denial for the right to decide for their bodies, lives and futures affecting impoverished rural adolescent girls and young-women.
6. Promote positive social norms by facilitating open discussions within communities to challenge and dismantle harmful traditional practices favoring female genital mutilation, teen marriages and pregnancies, sexual and gender-based violence and impeding impoverished adolescent girls and young women to exercise their sexual and reproductive health and rights and bodily autonomy without coercion for their well-being.
7. Actively involve adolescent girls and young women in the design, implementation, and evaluation of all programs to ensure relevance and effectiveness.
